Deacon’s Back-To-School

Clothing Drive

The Deacon’s are sponsoring a back to school clothing give away.  For the past month people have been donating gently used children’s and young adult’s school clothes.  Everyone in the community is invited to come and pick out a few items to help stretch the family budget as you prepare to get the kids back to school.  For those who need it, we also have new back packs filled with school supplies.  This event will be held Aug 21-23, 10am – 2pm.

IT'S TIME TO WARM UP THE VOCAL CHORDS

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!!!!!!!!!!  Choir is starting on August 28th at 7PM!!!!  It will be great to see everyone!  Feel free to extend an invitation to anyone that may enjoy an hour of singing, laughter, and listening to me whine….just a little.  New faces are always welcome…our family has lots of room to grow!  There will be a surprise waiting for everyone after practice.  You won’t want to miss it!!   –Melody

ROAST BEEF DINNER

SEPTEMBER 18TH

4PM - 6PM

TICKETS:  $7

benefits the PreSchool program

What an awesome time we had at VBS this year.  By the end of the week we saw 57 different children and almost 40 adult volunteers.  The songs were awesome and all of the children who participated in the worship servide on July 20th got their very own CD!  Stan, Alex, Copper and Nick were wonderful.  That Stan, he was one cool nerd!

Special thanks to our VBS coodrinator Barb Conner.  We celebrated her great work with a present for her very own big backyard - a butterfly bush and decorative ball.

Our special mission service project this year was "Operation Backpack".  We collected enough for 29 backpacks filled with school supplies.  Children also donated clothes for our back to school clothing drive and games for Family First Friday.

Each time the children participated in some act of service during the week they got tp put a "handprint" on the communiyt service wall of fame.  We had over 300 handprints.

We are already planning an exciting VBS for 2009.  Can't wait to see everyone there.

FAMILY FIRST FRIDAY

How about a night at the movies?  Better yet, how about a FREE night at the movies?  Beginning Oct. 3rd and running through the first Friday of April everyone is invited to spend an evening watching a movie on our big screen followed by a time for playing some board games or just hanging out.  This event is open to everyone in our community.  Children under 16 must have adult supervision.  We even have a real theater-style popcorn machine!  We will start at 6:30pm and run until about 9.  Movies will be about 90 minutes in length and you decide if you want to stick around afterwards.

Sarah, Amy, Paula and Larissa on the Adventure Club maiden voyage.  (Jake was taking the picture!)

ADVENTURE CLUB

The Adventure Club got its start in June and they haven’t stopped yet. So far they have…

Biked 24 miles from Emlenton to St George (and back). While on that adventure they , hiked to the top of the Rockland tunnel and took a dip in the Allegheny. (It was a really hot day.)

On their second trip they got about two thirds of the way down the river at Cook’s Forest on tubes and canoes when a storm rolled in. So, out of the water they came. But that didn’t keep them from enjoying the rest of the afternoon. So off they went to Pizza Pub and then Widnoon for ice cream.

They even picked up a couple other folks who didn’t like the idea of floating down the river, but thought ice cream sounded pretty darn good. Their third time out included a picnic and exploration at Helen Furnace en route for their Horseback Riding trip. But, before they could get there another Sunday afternoon storm brewed and the horses got a break.

The next trip which is canoeing on the Allegheny is planned for  17th of August. For September, they are working out the details for a trip to see the Pirates take on the Astros with Zambelli fireworks after the game (Fri Sep 19).  Before the snow flies, they hope to have a golf scramble, go biking and hiking through the fall foliage and after the snow… well who knows, but a  couple Adventurers’ have expressed an interest in skiing (cross-country and/or downhill).

You do not have to attend all the adventures to be part of this group.  Just let Jake or Amy know what sounds fun to you and feel free to join in.  You may also call the church office, watch the bulletin or check the website for more information on upcoming events.

CRAFT NIGHT

Have you ever wanted to learn a new craft?  Do you have a craft you might teach?  Would you like to just bring in a project you have been working on and enjoy the fellowship with others?  Do you just need a “night out”?  Whatever your reason or interest, you are invited to join us for “Craft Night”.  We will meet 7-9pm on the FOURTH Wednesday of every month beginning in September.  Bring a project you have been working on, or help Pastor Stephanie make dip mix packets to be sold at the Bazaar.  (ingredients are already purchased)   Feel free to bring a snack to share with the group.  Our first night will include some discussion about future craft projects.  Don’t worry, even if you don’t want to learn how to do a project you can still enjoy the time with the group by doing your own project, or just chatting.  See you September 24th!

Meet Our New Ministry Partners!

These beautiful people are our new church partners.  They are the Musenyi Buha congregation from Rwanda.  We support them with our prayers and they are doing the same for us.  One way we are supporting the people of Rwanda is by serving coffee from Rwanda on Sunday mornings.  We encourage everyone to visit the website www.drinkcoffeedogood.com and learn how you too can give hope to folks by simply changing the brand of coffee you put in your cup each day.

BLOOD DRIVE!!!

August 15th

Our goal was 30 units.

We collected 32.

Prayer Shawl Ministry

The prayer shawl ministry team enjoys making shawls which are given to people as a reminder of the love and care God and the Sligo congregation has for them during times of trial as well as celebration.  If you have made a shawl to be used, please drop it off at the church office.

Hospital Snack Basket

Friends and families often rush to the hospital when a loved one is ill or injured.  Through the generosity of many, SPC has supplied free snacks located in a basket in the waiting area.  If you would like to support this ministry you may drop off snacks at the church office, or send a contribution to the church address; PO Box 310, Sligo PA 16255.

Per Capita

The per capita for 2008 is $24.39.  The Session greatly appreciates member's contributions toward this annual obligation.  Please be sure to mark your check or envelope with the words, "per capita".
